What is Anxiety?
Severe anxiety describes state of apprehension, uncertainty, and fear resulting from the anticipation of a realistic or fantasized threatening event or situation, often impairing physical and psychological functioning. Categories range from generalized anxiety, social phobia, agoraphobia (with or without panic attacks) and post-traumatic conditions.
Agoraphobia, taken from the Greek word that translates as “fear of open spaces,” is used today by psychologists to mean the fear of having fearful feelings which sometimes leads to avoidance of certain situations or activities. Some possible symptoms include:
- Difficulty Breathing
- Heart Palpitations
- Chest Pain or Discomfort
- Choking or Smothering Sensations
- Unsteady Feelings
- Hot/Cold Flashes
- Fatigue or Fainting
- Trembling and Nervousness
- Social Phobias
- “Racing” Thoughts
- Feelings of Unreality

A professional research study examined the effectiveness of the CHAANGE program. Two groups were used. One was a group of CHAANGE participants who had completed the program in the past 18 months to 1 year. The second group was made up of people just beginning the CHAANGE program. People who completed the CHAANGE program:
- Felt less anxious
- Were less depressed
- Were less fearful of many situations
- Were less angry
- Had better coping skills
- Had increased confidence in their ability to solve personal problems
- Were more at ease in social situations
- Felt more energetic
A second part of the study examined medical costs before and after CHAANGE treatment. Results showed that CHAANGE participants had cost savings from 26% to 62% in the year following treatment compared to the year before treatment. CHAANGE works! And it can work for you.
