Symptoms of Severe Anxiety
Once a reaction of severe anxiety is triggered, it typically develops into a cycle of fear. And from that point on, you’ll do almost anything to avoid situations that cause that fear.
- Difficulty Breathing
- Heart Palpitations
- Chest Pain or Discomfort
- Choking or Smothering Sensations
- Unsteady Feelings
- Hot/Cold Flashes
- Fatigue or Fainting
- Trembling and Nervousness
- Social Phobias
- “Racing” Thoughts
- Feelings of Unreality
You may have suffered for years from severe anxiety or panic attacks. You may experience generalized anxiety or have social phobias.
Define Anxiety Disorders
We at CHAANGE much prefer to describe the “Disorder” as Condition we have when we’ve experience circumstances and events we know well are the causative factors that create our tendency for Severe Anxiety. For the same reason, we do not see Severe Anxiety as a “sickness”. We actually are quite normal, often bright individuals, who are naturally responding in anxious ways. We know those factors well (make here a link to my article, Developmental Factors of Anxiety).
Severe Anxiety is a general heading under which we find a number of terms which are sub-category of anxiety conditions determined by symptoms, and describes the uncomfortable bodily sensations and frightening, negative thoughts you experience when imagining some future danger or misfortune. Categories of severe anxiety include generalized anxiety, social phobia, agoraphobia (with or without panic attacks) and post-trauma conditions. Agoraphobia, taken from the Greek word that translates as “fear of open spaces”, is used today by psychologists to mean the fear of having fearful feelings which sometimes leads to avoidance of certain situations or activities.
Causes of Severe Anxiety
Most people who suffer from severe anxiety conditions have three forces working within them: (1) a biological sensitivity to anxiety; (2) learned behaviors or beliefs; and (3) stress. They also tend to be highly intelligent, sensitive people who often were raised to be perfectionists.
